English Department
The Department of English occupies a pioneering status in the history of M.S.M College, as it was established along with the inception of the college in 1964. During the initial phase, it functioned as a vital instrument in imparting communicative competence in a global medium to students pursuing undergraduate courses in other disciplines. In a short span of time, the Department attained a steady course of progress in terms of academic excellence and infrastructural facilities. In recognition of the merit and achievements of the Department, the University of Kerala to which the college is affiliated, accepted the proposal for commencing a Degree Course in English, and subsequently the B.A. Degree Course in English Language and Literature was started in 1970. Another milestone in the academic evolution of the Department was the sanctioning of the Post Graduate Course in English Language and Literature in 2001. B.A. in English and Communicative English was sanctioned in 2020. Guided by a succession of eminently qualified Heads of the Department and supported by a sincerely motivated faculty, the Department of English of M.S.M. College has been making rapid strides in attaining greater heights of academic performance.
Apart from conscientiously adhering to the vested task of syllabus- oriented knowledge dissemination, the Faculty of English has also asserted its commitment to the student community through allied activities like organization of academic conferences and seminars, consultancy and counselling services, artistic and literary festivals and competitions, placement activities, and P.T.A. and Alumni Meets. Efforts are on to prepare a registry of the former students of the Department who adorn various walks of life both in India and abroad. With the concerted efforts of everyone involved – the U.G.C., the Management, the Faculty, the Student Community and the illustrious Alumni of the Department, it has been a kind of dream –run in transforming the Department of English of M.S.M. College, from its humble origins to its most modern guise, characterized by state-of-the-art technological features like Multimedia equipment, Computers and the Internet, a Smart Class room with the interactive board facility, and a language lab. Over the years, the Department Library has also been expanded in terms of quantity and quality, to cater to the varying needs of the U.G and the P.G students.
Perfection is not a desirable quality in any human activity as it preempts the scope and efforts for further improvement. Far from being content with the palms and laurels won in the past, the faculty of the Department of English has constantly been in search of novel ways and means to serve the interests of the students as well as the society at large.

mission & vision of THE DEPARTMENT
Department of English stands ever-committed to the lofty task of nation-building
By making a steady supply of richly informed, ethically upright, critically insightful and linguistically skilled youth, to strengthen the precious human resource of the country. This mission is sought to be accomplished through the amalgamation of a variety of empowering features such as knowledge, practical thought, rational capacity, analytical skills, technical prowess and communicative ability. The power thus gained is sought to be tempered and brought to a fine balance through the inculcation of reflective and spiritual values like compassion, aesthetic perception, and above all, a reverent allegiance to a force that controls everything.
Education, according to this vision, is complete only when the youth acquires moral, material and spiritual freedom, through the realization of a mental state that can harmoniously blend material aspirations with moral obligations, rights with duties, and aesthetics with ethics. Studies in the English language-creative, critical, theoretical-are oriented to this vision, and adapted to suit this mission.
