Department of Chemistry
With an aim to uplift the comprehensive status of the community around, which was socially, economically and literarily in a backward position, the Milad E- Sherief Memorial College was established in 1964.The mission was launched by Al Haj P.K Kunju Sahib whose name was renowned as an educationalist, a politician, an economist and as versatile figure in almost all fields of the society.
Chemistry had been taught as a subsidiary subject for B.Sc Mathematics and Botany, from1968 onwards, the year in which the college was upgraded to degree level. The B.Sc in Chemistry was started in July, 1977, thanks to the initiatives taken by the late P.A.Haris, Chairman of the governing body and the late Prof.R.Eswara Pillai, Principal. From the University’s side, unstinted assistance for approval and related matters, was extended by Sri. R. Ramachandran Pillai, member of the Syndicate. Late Sri. K. Krishna Pillai, formerly Professor of Chemistry, NSS College Pandalam, graciously placed at our disposal, his vast experience and expertise, as our technical advisor. We also gratefully acknowledge the services rendered by Dr. N Sundaresan, formerly Head of the Department of Chemistry, S N College, Kollam, Dr. C. P Joshua of the Department of Chemistry, University of Kerala and Prof. K.M. Thomas, formerly Head of the department, Christian College, Chengannur, for setting up of the department in our college. We also remember the kind gesture of the Late Sri.A.S.Hameed, Secretary, MSM Trust, in providing the right physical infrastructure for the proper functioning of the department. The Science block and a well- equipped laboratory were installed in August 1979.
The present chairman of College Governing Body, Al Haj P.A. Hilal Babu, a man gifted with remarkable insight and depth of vision, has been a constant source of inspiration for us. During the nineties, the department saw a boom in its developmental activities. This was made possible due to the keen interest taken by, Al Haj P.A. Hilal Babu. He was successful in setting up a new Instrumentation Laboratory equipped with a good number of advanced appliances and installing the LPG system in the central laboratories.
One more leaf was added to the annals of the college with the starting of the Postgraduate course in Analytical chemistry in 1998. The department proved its elegance by bagging ranks in M.Sc Analytical Chemistry of University of Kerala frequently. The students of the PG department of Chemistry periodically release their Hand Written Magazines. Our M.Sc student, Deepu R Nath got selection for summer research fellowship. We are providing ample opportunities for the students pursuing post graduation in this department, to visit and do project works in premier institutes like FACT, KMML, English Indian Clay Ltd, NIIST, VSSC, CEPC, CESS etc. Periodically our department arranges National Seminars and workshops, and celebrates all important days of scientific importance like National Science Day, Ozone day and environmental day etc. either independently or in collaboration with other science departments of this college. Our students have participated and won prizes in various state and national level competitions organized by prestigious organizations. Kumari Drisya Unni has attended Advature camp at Manali on October 2018 conducted by National Service Scheme. Active participation of our students in various college, University and National level sports events is commendable.
Faculty members published several scientific articles in peer reviewed journals. Dr. Neethu Sundaresan, Assistant Professor got guideship of University of Kerala and currently two students are pursuing PhD research under her guideship. Dr. Neethu Sundaresan of this department was awarded Visiting Scientist Award from Indian National Science Academy during 2015- 2016. Dr. Lakshmy M, Smt. Divya V, Smt. Sunitha V R and Dr. Reena T A had successfully completed their minor projects funded by University Grants Commission.
